We chose to focus on the one ingredient that is the most important thing to us. Fragrance.
The way your candle, soap or perfume smells, in our opinion, is the difference between a good product and a great product.
We fully stand behind the quality of our fragrances. We test them in our lab to ensure that you’re receiving only the best.
Founded in 2012, we started out as a 100% NZ owned and operated family business that sold soaps and candles at local markets.
As I delved deeper into crafting a range of body care products, I struggled to find many of the ingredients that were used in the online recipes and videos I was following. This led me to importing these ingredients from overseas, which in turn led me to another problem.
In order to be cost effective I had to buy large quantities, but I couldn’t use it all myself. This is how our original company Zen Designs was born. I started selling all my left over ingredients and very quickly discovered a need in our crafting community for a variety of ingredients which weren’t readily available in NZ at that time.
Fast forward to 2024 . We now have New Zealand’s largest range of premium quality fragrance oils.
We changed our name to Zen Aroma to better reflect our love of fragrance, and because we believe scent is the number one reason people are attracted to candles, soaps and all your wonderful hand made home and body products.
We believe in offering high quality, products and exceptional service.
 Even though I don’t sell soaps or candles any more, I like to think that our customers can find a little ‘zen’ when making their own products.
OUR FOUNDER
Kirsty Nielsen
After completing a Bachelor of Computing Systems in 2007 and beginning work with a company developing hotel booking software I quickly realised the IT industry was not for me.
I decided to turn my candle making hobby into a “side hustle”. I started attending local markets every weekend selling handmade candles, then quickly expanded to making melt and pour soap, before eventually graduating to cold process soap.
While I stopped attending markets several years ago, I still make all my own soaps, cosmetics and cleaning supplies.
In 2017 I attended the Handcrafted Soap & Cosmetic Guild conference in Las Vegas where I gained my Advanced CP/HP Soap Certificate.
In 2020 I completed my Diploma in Cosmetic Chemistry.
My goals for the future are to continue learning everything I can about fragrance, while maintaining a successful small business that supports not only my family, but our amazing community of like minded makers.
