Making Perfume & Cologne

Eau de Cologne – Usage Rate:

2 – 4%

Eau de cologne (EDC) has a much lower fragrance concentration (about 2% to 4%) than the EDT with a high alcohol content, and therefore it is the cheapest option. It generally lasts for up to two hours.

Eau de Toilette – Usage Rate:

5 – 9.5%

Eau de toilette (EDT) has a fragrance concentration of between 5% to 15%. It is cheaper than the EDP and is one of the most popular types of fragrance available. It will normally last two to three hours and is a popular choice for affordable body mists and roll-on perfumes.

Eau de Parfum – Usage Rate:

Not suitable

The next highest fragrance concentration would be eau de parfum (EDP) with oil concentration between 15 to 20%. On average, you can get a good four to five hours of your fragrance lasting.

Perfume – Usage Rate:

Not suitable

With more than 20% oil concentration, you are likely to still notice your fragrance working from morning to evening. Perfumes have the highest fragrance concentration and would last the longest among all other types: usually six to eight hours. These are also the most expensive due to the high concentration of fragrance and/or essential oils.

ScentStay (optional):

2%

Perfumers Alcohol (Spray On):

Up to 100%

Mineral Oil (Roll On):

Up to 100%

How to guide:

a) Decide if you want a spray or roll on product, then choose a suitable bottle.

Make a note of the volume capacity of the bottle: Roller bottles are usually 10ml. Spray bottles usually come in 30 – 100ml sizes.

b) Pick how strong a product you want: full strength perfume, or maybe a light body mist? Check the usage rates above and pick a number from the percentage range.

You should now have two numbers written down: bottle volume (BV) and fragrance strength (FS)

Now it’s time for a little maths.

How to calculate the formula:

  1. Take the volume of the bottle (BV) from Step One. In my example I’m using a 50ml spray bottle. So my first number in the formula is 50.
  2. Take the percentage of strength (FS) for the type of product you’re making. In my example I’ve decided to make a Perfume, and I’ve picked a strength of 30% (middle of the range). So my second number in the formula is 0.3

To convert a percentage to a number, move the decimal place two places over to the left, eg: 30.00% = 0.30 or 9.00% = 0.09 If you get stuck on the conversion, you can use this handy calculator:
    Percent to Decimal Calculator

  3. I’ve also decided to use ScentStay to help my perfume last a little longer. The usage rate for this is 2%, so my third number is 0.02
The Formula

50 x 0.3 = 15 (the amount of fragrance required: BV x FO)
50 x 0.02 = 1 (the amount of ScentStay required: BV x SS)

Total = 16ml

Now for the last piece of math: how much carrier (alcohol or oil) to use. Take the BV (50 in my example) and minus the total of fragrance and ScentStay (16 in my example)

50 – 16 = 34

34ml is the amount of carrier needed to fill my bottle.

Now for the fun part.

Using the numbers from Step Two, measure the fragrance oil (FO) and ScentStay (SS) into a small beaker or mixing bowl, and mix well

Measure your carrier of choice into a separate beaker or bowl. Add the FO/SS blend, or just FO if not using ScentStay, to the carrier and mix well.

So for my perfume, these are my final numbers:

15ml Fragrance oil
1ml ScentStay
34ml Perfumers alcohol

Pour into your bottle, cap and you’re done!

Was looking for NZ inspired fragrance and was recommended this one and I wasn’t disappointed, soft earthy scent very crisp clean fresh and slightly sweet…strange I know but really made me think of rivers and earth. Behaved incredibly well in CP, will recommend this if your after a ‘nature’ scent

This scent perfectly matches the pounamu soap that I make, however it can be a bit of a pain to work with. I find it unpredictable whether it will behave, rice or accelerate, it must be far more sensitive to room/oil/lye temps than other FOs. It’s worth persevering with because the scent is unique and has great scent retention. It’s the one fragrance the hubby requests me to make him.

Loved this in the bottle a very subtle fragrance but disappointing in cold process soap. I soap at low temp but the fragrance all but disappeared and I am generous with amount used. I did not get acceleration but a little ricing in the darker colour but this stick blended out easily. No discolouration. I think maybe candles may suit this fragrance better?

This smells just divine. Quite unusual and and complex but also airey. I used it in soap making and unfortunately it was very speedy and thickened too quickly . No discolouration though. It would be an incredible scent in candle making I suspect. Also could be good in skin products. I give it a 3 for soap making but it could definitely be a 5 in another type of product.

As others have said it is quite an unusual fragrance but it is very nice. It is a light and airy musk, but also slightly aquatic and the greenery is definitely there but is sort of in the background. It is hard to describe with words but is kind of like a scent you would have at a spa in the forest.

I was a bit nervous to use this fragrance after reading the reviews. I soaped at 100f for both my lyes and oils, I stick blended the fragrance oil into my oils before adding my lye and it soaped beautifully, no ricing, slight acceleration which worked in my favour for the layers I had planned. Love this fragrance.

Lovely light/fresh scent. Fast acceleration in CP soap, but great if you want layers to set up quickly

I almost don’t want to review this fragrance and alert others to the beauty of it! The subtle, gentle fragrance is so calm and relaxing and perfect for the soap I had been planning for months. The reason I gave it 4/5 stars is that it riced. I only intended to use a whisk after adding the fragrance to keep the batter workable for the design I had in mind, but had to bring out the stick blender to deal to the ricing, and therefore the batter accelerated quicker. I still got an absolutely gorgeous soap – I just had to rethink the design. I advise only mixing to emulsion and adding fragrance immediately prior to pouring.
